Seabee Powerline Crew

Korea 1951-54

George Gustin and Gerald Moore at K6. Gerald modeling a new pair of bib overalls he had mail ordered from Montgomery Wards. Gerald was on the Powerline Crew. To say Gerald "marched to a different drummer" would be an understatement. The first time I laid eyes on him was when I arrived on the Island of Kwajalein in 1951. He had a long scraggly beard that hid his face and his clothes seemed to always look like he had just done a hard days work.

Gerald had been a U.S. Marine in WWII and had come out of the New Mexico hills as a Seabee Reserve to serve in the Korean War. A seasoned power lineman by trade, he was a teacher to the younger crew members who admired and respected him.

Before the truce was signed in 1953 when time for R&R in Japan came, instead of getting on an R&R plane heading to Japan, he was seen headed North toward the front lines with an M1 rifle. He showed up several weeks later with an Australian rifle and many days AOL. Ed Posey told me he saw him when he came back through K3 on his way somewhere for court marshal. Ed said he had the Australian rifle and a dog with him and seemed unphased by the experience. Thanks to Richard Walters for the picture.
