"The photo of the Rescue Sea Plane brings back the time that someone had the bright idea to
make an arresting cable for it, we got a huge amount of huge anchor chain and strung it out along side the strip on both sides, it took a D8 to move it, then connected a cable across the strip connected to each end of the anchor chain, the tail hook was supposed to hook up on the cable and the drag of the chain was supposed to slow the Seaplane down, all went well untill the plane landed then everything went to hell, the chain did its job, --- Too well -- the plane slowed, more like stopped and the plane driver got knocked out when he hit his head on something inside the plane, dont know what ever happened to the anchor chain/cable setup but to my
knowledge that was the end of arresting gear at K3"....... Don McDaniel, April 2000
" The Douglas F3D-2 Skyknight. A large twin-engine, straight wing jet, the F3D placed its flight crew side-by-side. Fitted with a powerful radar, it could track and kill any aircraft it might encounter in the black murk in which it flew. No match for any of the jet powered fighters in daylight, the F3D ruled the night and proved to be a real threat to communist jets any time they came up after dark. In fact, the F3D-2 scored more victories than any other Naval aircraft, including the Grumman F9F Panther. Eventually, the F3D-2 was used in the role of BARCAP, patrolling ahead of B-29s during night bombing missions over North Korea. Skyknights led the way, clearing the sky of enemy interceptors and were so effective that not one B-29 was lost to enemy fighters when escorted by the F3D-2." F3D History
